How to Improve Home Security with Outdoor Solar Lighting

By strategically placing solar lights around your house you can significantly improve the security of your home and make it a safer place for you and your family.

Home Security Lighting with No Running Costs

As the sun goes down and twilight approaches a solar powered light will start to emit light from the power stored in its internal battery, which has been charged up during the day. The charge can last up to 10 hours which means the area around your property can be illuminated for the whole night.

The good thing about this home security solution is that after funding the cost of buying the right solar lights there are absolutely no running costs because the sun’s energy is free. So you will not have any increase in your electric bill. This is good for you and also good for the environment.

At some point, you may need to get some replacement solar light batteries, but by the time that happens you might be better off actually getting some solar light replacements instead, especially if the solar lighting units you originally purchased were quite cheap.

Installation is Easy

The outdoor solar lights you chose for your home security project must be positioned so that any dark areas around you home are illuminated at night. So work out where these good locations are and after you buy your solar lighting test them at night in those positions before the final installation.

You will undoubtedly find that final repositioning is required to get the best results. They are easy to install so moving them around for testing will not be difficult.

Low-level solar lighting can simply be pushed straight into the ground on a spike or post and higher level units can easily be installed with just a couple of screws. And of course, there is no wiring involved!

Motion Sensor Solar Lights

Security and your own safety can be improved even more by adding motion sensor solar lighting in those areas of higher traffic such as doorways, paths, parking lots and driveways.

A typical solar powered motion sensor light will be spotlight or floodlight with a separate small solar panel, which can be sited away from the light itself so you can put it in the best position to receive the maximum amount of sunlight during the day.

At night the light from the solar lamp is produced by an array of twenty or so bright LED lights that have a typical range of about 30 feet. So don’t mount them too high if you want to illuminate a large area, but also don’t be tempted to locate them too low, especially for a security application, as it will then be easier for someone to tamper with them.

Get the best outdoor solar lights for your home security project and be safe!
